About the Event
WORKSHOP OVERVIEW:
Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a confronting, distressing and perturbing behaviour. Working with children and adolescents who engage in nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) can be challenging for even the most seasoned of practitioners. Those working with clients across this age span are in a unique position to intervene in the development and maintenance of self-injurious behaviours, as these behaviours typically begin during the period of adolescence. To provide context, the workshop will begin with developing an understanding of the multidetermined nature of NSSI and the multifaceted way in which it presents. Drawing upon both her research and practical experience, Madeline will then adopt an interactive approach to explore creative ways of therapeutically engaging with children and adolescents who self-injure. Participants will be also encouraged to share their own knowledge and experience of working with NSSI. The workshop aims to explore strategies for managing NSSI to reduce its frequency, severity and the urges that drive it in children and young people, across a variety of educational, therapeutic and community settings. Several practical resources in the form of handouts will be provided for immediate use within your practice.
